Winners of a Queens Award for Voluntary Service  

Devoted to the Multiple Sclerosis Community of Swindon and the surrounding area.

Swindon Therapy Centre for Multiple Sclerosis was founded initially in 1981 as a self-help group, which has grown and developed over a number of years following the acquisition of a 2 person Oxygen chamber in 1983. When the parent group (ARM) went into receivership, the centre quickly established itself as an individually registered charity and really began to take shape into the many services it offers today.

In 2008 the Centre started treating other conditions, such as Strokes, Parkinson’s Disease, as well as children with Cerebral Palsy, Autism and brain injuries, as all these conditions can benefit from the oxygen therapy, physiotherapy and other therapies on offer.

In January 2010, after 4 years hard fundraising, the Centre moved to its current premises at Bradbury House, West mead Drive. The new premises are 4,500 sq ft and have allowed the expansion needed to help more people.  There is a new 12 seater oxygen chamber, a state-of-the art fully equipped gym and physio room, 2 separate therapy rooms, kitchen and social area with dedicated disabled internet point, reception, separate meeting room and further private room, with disabled toilets and parking.

The centre continues to offer therapies, advice and support to MS people and their families in Swindon and the local area, being the only Centre of its kind within a 35 - mile radius of Swindon. The Centre plays an invaluable role in the local community since it provides services not available through the National Health Service. Many doctors refer patients to the Centre. The group's activities are a lifeline for its many members and their families, who are actively encouraged, through mutual support, to face the reality of Multiple Sclerosis and the possible challenges it brings.

The therapies offered by the Centre are a major contribution to the fight against MS. Not only does the group offer support, but also practical solutions to problems and help with day to day living.  The friendly staff are experts in their fields and can assist with many practical concerns, as well as offer confidential support in other aspects of life such as the initial adjustment to new sufferers of MS and their families or carers. Also available are financial guidance, the gaining of social confidence, dietary advice and exercise regimes. The exercise classes are also very popular and are lots of fun.
