Business Meeting

Thu, May 16th 2019 at 7:30 am - 8:30 am

Rotary Club of Chestfield

Minutes of the Club Meeting held on Thursday morning 16th May 2019.

Present:  15 members present

Apologies:  Myfanwy, John G, Andrew & Jean, Ian, Marian, David K, Pete, Elaine, Jackie, Maureen, Nick, Owain, Ron, Sue, Hilary.

Grace:  By Paul

Visitors & Guests:  None this week.

Recent Events:  15th Anniversary evening dinner was last week.  Huge turnout and felt to be very successful.  David B’s presentation lasted for 45 minutes.  Kathy said it was nice to see all the past presidents present.  Pat said it made her a bit nervous (‘though three glasses of rose helped).

The meeting commiserated with Paul who had fallen and bumped his head.

Andrew reported that last week end he went to a Rotary International conference in Nottingham the theme of which was ‘Anti-Slavery’.  Slavery is all around us in the most unlikely places eg the people, mostly young women who work in nail bars.  Speakers at the conference included one form an anti-gangmasters unit.  Andrew met various district worthies whose greetings he conveyed ‘though he couldn’t remember their actual names.

Coming Events:  Gardening this Saturday May 18th, at the Whit & Tank.  5x of us going to this from 0930 until about 1130.  Rob asked what tools he might need to bring.  Most likely task is planting out plants in borders, so only hand tools needed.

Bowls at Chislet Bowling Club will be a week on Tuesday ie the 28th, 1400 for 1430 start.  Sandwiches and scones for afters to be provided by Dave’s wife, Diane.  Please wear flat shoes on the green.  About 12 of us will be going.

Barn Dance on 15th June.  Pat will be plugging this at future meetings.  Suggestion that members who aren’t going might like to pay a ‘forfeit’ by donating something to the raffle.

Murder Mystery on July 27th at Ron & Irene’s.  Ron away poorly today.  He will talk about this when he is back, hopefully next week.

Any Other Business:  Lesley spoke about Haven the charity which assists local homeless people.  They need donations of sleeping bags, Backpacks, and men’s toiletries.  Any such items members want to donate from their former camping trips – please bring along on a Thursday morning to give to Lesley.

Spyros had some Michaelmas Daisy plants to sell.

Andrew said that Blean school had raised the amazing sum of £1870 for Walk for Water.  The Board meeting tonight will discuss how to recognise this by a book donation.

David M said that he had sent round an email asking for any changes to numbers attending the Apeldoorn week end.  A couple of people had replied.  Numbers are now fixed, so Andrew can make the necessary bookings.

Raffle:  was won by Dave C.

Master at Arms:  Nick away this week, so we were all spared his attentions.  Paul congratulated Nick for being well on target for the amount of money he has raised so far this year.

Final Toast:  by Pat

Next Meeting:  Breakfast meeting on Thursday 23rd May.

Meeting closed at approximately 0830.
