Minutes of  the Business Meeting

Held on Thursday, January 17th 2019

                                             At The Golf Club, Chestfield

Kent College, Interact:

Our three guests gave a short presentation on their many fundraising activities which have generated over £8,500 in the past year.    The three share the role of President and each focuses on activities at local, national and global levels.      Louis is involved in a campaign to link schools around the world to raise funds for UNICEF and, in particular, Syrian refugees.     Garima is focused on a charity, Ambitions About Autism for which they have organized a murder mystery evening and bake sale and are planning more events during the coming year including a car wash and dog wash.   Emily is involved with Fifth Trust, a charity in the Elam Valley which supports disabled adults.

Ukelele Club:

Many thanks to Dave C. who reported that his Ukelele Club had raised £300.00 which it had donated to the Club charity account.

Suggested Twinning with RC Thimpu, Bhutan:

This was a suggestion from Emma Slade which was circulated recently seeking the views of everyone on the possibility.     Andrew B., would welcome written comments from members who have yet to reply to him before putting the suggestion back to the Board.

Car Parking:

Dates have now been arranged and circulated up to the end of May.     There are forms in the folder so please sign up in good time if you can help.

Treasurer:

David M. reported that charity account stood at £1369.00 and the club account £549.00.

Meal Steward:

Godfrey stressed the need for apologies to reach him at the very latest by 5.00 pm on the Tuesday evening prior to a meeting as this is the time when he must give numbers to the chef at the Golf Club.       Any apologies received after that time will mean that the meal has to be paid for.

Proposed Day Trip to France and/or the Western Front:

In view of the current uncertainty surrounding the arrangements for travel to Europe, it was agreed to defer consideration of the trips France and/or the Western Front until the situation is clearer.

Thursday, January 10th – Board Meeting:

The minutes of the Board Meeting of January 10th have been circulated.

Friday, January 18th – Table-tennis Evening:

Please note that the table-tennis evening has been postponed and Dave C. will set up another date to be announced, probably in March.

Saturday, January 19th – Car Parking  at Whitstable:

There will be car parking in Whitstable next Saturday, January 19th and Godfrey would be glad of help.   If members have not signed up, please just come along.

Saturday, January 19th – Rotary Club of Herne Bay, Quiz Night:

A table of eight has been organised but if members have not signed up and would like to go they would be welcome; please contact Jane Furnival (jane@thefurnivals.com).   The cost is £8.00 including a fish and chip supper but bring your own drinks.    The evening starts at 7.00 for 7.30 pm and will be at the Retreat Hall, Clarence Road, Herne Bay, CT6 8TH.

Saturday, January 26th – Young Chef Competition:

The next round of the Young Chef Competition will take place on Saturday, January 26th at Orpington College.

Thursday, February 7th – Speaker Leila from Pilgrims’ Hospice:

The speaker on Thursday, February 7th will be Leila from the President’s charity, Pilgrims’ Hospice.

Thursday, February, 14th – Guest Breakfast:

This is a great chance to show guests and potential members what a fine lot we are so please try to bring someone along.

Saturday, February 23rd – Shelterbox Dinner:

Gill and Robert Sissons invite everyone to an Italian-themed dinner from the Puglia region in aid of Shelterboxes.    The dinner will be at their home, 5 Churchwood Drive, Chestfield, CT5 3PG, on Saturday, February 23rd and   the cost will be £30.00 per person.      Numbers are limited to ten so please sign up very soon on the form in the folder.

Friday, March 22nd – Walk for Water:

David M. has circulated a list of volunteers from previous years and please let him know as soon as possible if you can help again this year on Friday, March 22nd.      In addition, David needs at least two more people to sign up to help on the day.

Saturday, June 15th – Barn Dance:

The plan for the Barn Dance has been revised and it is now proposed that it be held at All Saints Hall, Church Road, Whitstable on Saturday, June 15th.    Revised costings have been circulated and the financial risk has come down to a break even of 51 tickets sold at £20.00 inclusive of food but not drink.      David M. stressed the need for everyone to sell as many tickets as possible to make the evening a real success.    As parking is restricted at All Saints Hall, Jenny very kindly offered space for up to 50 cars about 100 yards away.     Pat proposed that the Club agree to hold the Barn Dance at All Saints Hall on June 15th and this was agreed unanimously.   

Saturday, July 27th – Murder Mystery Evening:

Ron is developing a plan to hold a murder mystery evening entitled Foul Play Et Alva at his home on Saturday, July 27th at 7.00 for 7.30 pm with a fish and chip supper at 8.30 pm but bring your own drink.    This event was proposed to the Club.     As expected the possibility of someone from the Club coming to a gory end swung it and the proposal was agreed unanimously .

Saturday, August 3rd – Whitstable Harbour Day:

This event was very successful last year and Sue proposed that the Club take part again on Saturday, August 3rd and this was agreed unanimously.
