Guests:

Lesley Robertson guest of Robert S.

Grace:            Paul

David Bowley:

Jackie took David and Ann for lunch recently and David K. also saw them on Tuesday.     David is in good spirits and making progress but slowly.    Visitors or phone calls would be very welcome.

Speakers, Zoe Hatton and George Stonor:

Zoe and George are two very impressive A-level students from Queen Elizabeth School, Faversham who talked about the participation of their school in the Formula One in Schools competition, a global event with over 40 countries taking part.     Students have to design and manufacture a miniature Formula One styled car using CAD/CAM and engineering skills.     The car, that has to be built to conform to a 40-page book of rules, is powered by a CO2 gas cylinder and the objective is to be the fastest and competitions are won or lost by 1,000th of a second.     The competition has eight regional finals in the UK and a national final, the winner of which will go to Singapore next year for the international final.   Queen Elizabeth School has been involved for the past 12 years and has consistently been top of the south-east region and has reached the national final twice.    In addition to the design and construction of their car, the team has to raise the money they need from events and sponsorship.    Zoe is a local, Chestfield girl.

Board Meeting, Thursday, August 9th:

The minutes of the lastest Board Meeting have been circulated.

Lombok Earthquake:

Andrew B. proposed a donation of £300.00 to Shelterbox in view of the recent earthquake in Lombok and this was agreed.     In a discussion that followed a question was raised as to why the Board had decided not to give a donation to the MS Therapy Centre in response to their appeal to support the cost of hydrotherapy sessions at £20.00 per patient when they were happy to send a donation to Lombok.      It was pointed out that the Board had not refused a donation to the MS Therapy Centre but had deferred a decision because the Club funds are heavily committed at the moment and it should be possible to make a significant donation when they are replenished; the donation to Shelterbox was in response to an urgent disaster.      The Board remains keen to support local organisations and the balance of funding between local and international bodies is invariably about equal.

Whitstable Harbour Day, Saturday, August 11th:

The Whitstable Harbour day on August 11th was a great success during which pirates Pat and Jean made a significant contribution to Anglo-US relations.     £231.00 was raised on the day.
