Prior to taking early retirement, he was the Senior Keeper of Technology based at the Bradford Industrial Museum, Eccleshill Bradford. he Had the privilege of being responsible for the city's industrial, technical and scientific collections held in the Bradford Museum Service.
When researching his book - On Tenterhooks - he kept coming across a name - Tino Valdi - who had been a spinner at Saltaire Mill in the late 1940s and early 1950s. He was a refugee who came to Britain after the war, went to work at Saltaire and on leaving the mill went onto to win, in 1961, the equivalent of the Eurovision Song Contest and worked with many performers, past and present, such as Norman Wisdom, Max Miller, Tommy Cooper, Ken Dodd to name just a few.
