The very successful and inaugural Classic Car Tour held in October 2017 by the Club raised an appreciable amount of sponsorship which was primarily for the local RNLI Lifeboat stations at North Kessock and on Loch Ness. The cheque handover at the North Kessock station was carried out at the end of January on a bitterly cold evening by Club President John Considine and Rotarians Ormond Smith and Chris Silver, immediately prior to the lifeboat, the Class 85 “Robert and Isobel Mowat” going out into dark, windswept Inner Moray Firth for a training exercise.
It had been agreed that the cheque presentation to the Loch Ness station be delayed until the official opening of the extensive new boathouse at Temple Pier near Drumnadrochit which now allows for the lifeboat to be housed safely within the boathouse when not in use. So it was on 3rd March that the Classic Car Tour organisers, Past President Nicol Manson and Rotarian Ormond Smith (seen here presenting the cheque to Jamie Young of the Loch Ness crew) travelled down to the official opening of the station to present the cheque. Following a brief opening ceremony, the brand new Class 85 boat, the “Sheila & Dennis Tongue IV” was launched and along with the “retiring” Class 75, the “Colin James Daniel” (on station for 4½ years with 101 rescues to its credit!) put on an impressive display out on the loch before unceremoniously heaving a crew member over the side of the Class 75 and effecting a simulated rescue of the “willing recipient” by the new craft.
The RNLI totally depends on donations and receives no support from the public purse and our Rotary donations of £1619 to each station literally just about covers the cost of equipping one crew member with their full kit...........a sobering financial thought but nevertheless much appreciated by both stations! That these crews are all volunteers on call 24/7 in all sorts of weather conditions is not only highly commendable but are offering a lifesaving service which is wholeheartedly appreciated by those who get into difficulties on the water.
