On Thursday 29th March 2018 in the absence of President Lindsay Roy, Wilna Roger took the chair as she welcomed 15 Rotarians, 12 guests of Rotarians and guest speaker Steven Dewar to our evening meeting which was held at the Gilvenbank Hotel.
On reception were Peter May and Paul Harris.
Our speaker this week was Steven Dewar from Curr and Dewar Auctioneers. Curr and Dewar are long established Auctioneers and Valuers tracing their roots back to 1862. Under the direction of Steven, a fourth generation Dewar in the family business, they continue to provide the same professional service to Solicitors, Banks, Trusts and Public ensuring complete satisfaction.
Steven started his career with Curr & Dewar and
gained a professional qualification with The Institute of Auctioneers and
Appraisers. He then widened his knowledge working in East Anglia and County
Durham. You may have seen Steven and Curr & Dewar on BBC Antiques Road
Trip, Bargain Hunt and Flog It, having recorded numerous programmes for
recent series. Collections and House Clearances covering Tayside, Fife,
Angus and Perthshire are conducted by their own van and men, offering a
complete in house one stop service. Their endeavour is to provide a high
quality, professional and polite service to all their customers. They conduct
regular sales on Tuesdays, commencing at 10am which include
Antiques, Quality Furnishings, Collectables and Household Effects; viewing is
prior to each sale - Sunday 10am-1pm and Monday 9am-7pm. A catalogue for each
sale is available for free from this web site prior to each sale or a copy can
be purchased from the Auction Rooms on view and sale days. They have introduced
a fully illustrated online catalogue allowing you to view all their sales from
the comfort of your home and office or even on the move. Few other
auctioneers offer the advantage of viewing a digital catalogue in advance of an
upcoming auction. Online commission bids can also be submitted via the
site. The digital catalogue provides international marketing of all
lots for sale. Steven had brought along several pieces to place on the
dinner tables which were later used as discussion pieces, the John Dick,
Lochgelly Tawse, Pastry Cutter, Whales inner ear, Scrimshaw decoration of a
whale’s tooth, Snuff box, Golfers scythe, Tom Morris long nose spoon, Nanking
porcelain China all of which were fabulous discussion pieces. After the meeting
was over one of our longer serving Rotarians said that that was one of the best
talks he had heard, yes it was a terrific night.
The Rotary vote of thanks was given by May Ford.
Grundy, Visitor and admin officer from RNLI, Anstruther. On reception will be Peter May, Roy Francey and Alistair Mcleod.
