Games Night at Langholm

Members travel to Langholm for the annual games evening with Langholm and other clubs

In President Scott Elliot's absence on the high seas, Vice President Mairhi Trickett welcomed members to last Thursday's meeting to hear a most interesting talk by Past President Iain Smith whose subject was a history of Borders College of Textiles and its influence on the textile industry in Hawick. Iain was able to draw on not only his own considerable experiences in the textile industry, but also from a paper written in 1912 by William Davis which detailed the growth of textiles, starting in the days when many families had their own looms at home, progressing to the early days when these knitters and weavers got together to form textile companies, combining their skills in the production of increasingly fine quality knitwear and tweeds, as Hawick became a center of excellence for their garments.Iain recounted his considerable experience in the Borders College and its influence in the training of apprentices and also in design. Mention was also made of the now dissolved Hawick Knitwear Manufacturers Association which looked after the interests of the textile manufacturers and for which the late Archie Purves, former President of the Rotary Club, was chief executive. Following his talk Iain answered many questions from members who reminisced about their own experiences with the textile trade, before Vice President accorded a well earned vote of thanks.Vice President Mairhi Trickett chaired a smaller than usual gathering of members – after a meal members agreed to give £110 to purchase medals for the Inter Primary Schools Gala and approach President Scott Elliot on his return from Cruising to present them.
