Nigel Barrett - From Conductor to MD

From Essex to Bury St Edmunds via London, Malawi, Middlesboro and Carlisle in public transport.

We were delighted to welcome back an old friend to the club, former Carlisle South member Nigel Barrett as our guest speaker.

Nigel joined Rotary after our own Past President Ron Bailey contacted Stagecoach busses in his year as the District Governor for district 1190 requesting assistance in transporting several hundred people from Penrith to Morcambe. Nigel, being the area manager for the whole North West stepped up to the mark for us, was invited to the club, and the rest is history. he is now the President Elect of the Rotary Club of Bury St. Edmunds Abbey.

Nigel gave an enjoyable presentation of his career, starting as a bus conductor on London Transport through being a driver to ventually becoming Managing Director of the company.

It has certainly been a varied career from looking after the congested routes of East London to the rural expanse of the Lake District and a tour running Stagecoaches Central African arm in Malawi where routes could cover three countries and most of the roads were dirt trackst.

It was also an ideal opportunity to present Nigel with a Club banner and a golden anniversary mug and we were delighted to receive a banner from his club in return.

A great pleasure to greet an old friend indeed
