34 members attended for a discussion about membership. Wide variety of points were made including:
Old model of Rotary as a businessmen's networking club dead.
Many people in later stages of career, approaching retirement are looking for something to do. Are they the potential members?
Launch of Wellington district club (for younger Rotarians) has strengthened the parent club which is growing. Any lessons for us?
Rotary is for people to use their skills to benefit the wider community.
Potential members ask "what can I get out of Rotary?" Should we invite people to talks that are specific to their field so could form part of professional development? Some members asked "is that the right question? Rotary is about what you can offer ...... the pay back comes afterwards."
We need to concentrate on our reason for being Rotary. A service organisation, not just fundraising.
Rotary needs to be fun and fellowship. We should keep doing the things we are good at - then the new members will come.
Perhaps we should advertise for new members. Who knows we exist?
We need a new major project. How do we find one?
Do we need a membership committee?
