Mairhi Trickett: Simon Wallace - Alzheimers Scotland

Thu, Nov 30th 2017 at 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Weekly meeting with guest speaker.

Last week's Rotary Club meeting was graced by the presence of three visiting Rotarians from the Duns Club, namely Nigel Warren, Robert Lamont and Andrew Lester.  Vice President Mairhi Trickett introduced the speaker Simon Wallace, Denholm, a volunteer fund-raiser for Alzheimer Scotland who spoke on the vexed subject of Dementia, an all-too-common brain problem sadly much in evidence today and, indeed, is now the most common cause of death in Scotland and affects over 90,000 people.  Although mostly found in the ageing community it can affect those in their middle-age and even younger and there are 2,500 sufferers in the Borders alone so affected and more women than men.  The cause of dementia is not known but it affects brain cells progressively and research for a cure is being carried out world-wide.  In an excellent talk he explained what help is available through drug treatment, non-drug therapy, available support, understanding of the condition and the benefits of friendship.  The talk touched the conscience of members and provoked many questions after which President Scott Elliot gave the club's vote of thanks.
