Instrumentalist Round, Cowbridge School

The first round of the annual Rotary Young Musician ( Instrumentalist) competition, organised by the Rotary Club of Llantwit Major, took place on the evening of Tuesday 5th December in the splendid setting of the Cowbridge School Hall.

Many members of local Rotary Clubs, some deservedly proud parents and a number of school staff were delighted by eight polished performances. Judges Mary Noyes, Mathew Nash and Hugh Phillips commented on the high standards on display whilst reminding everyone that, as in so many fields of competitive endeavour, “ less is sometimes more“.

Whilst the judges retired to consider their verdict, the audience was entertained by the Cowbridge School Big Band who demonstrated, as did the competitors, the excellence to be found in the School’s music department.

Joint first place was awarded to two great performances by Thomas Evans (cornet and trumpet) of Cowbridge School and to Efa Angharad Cray (harp) of Ysgol Cymraeg Bro Morgannwg. Both Efa and Thomas will now progress to the South Wales Area Final to be held early in the New Year.

In second place came Emily Jenkins (flute ) and third place went to Annie Wright (piano). Both Emily and Annie attend Cowbridge School.

Charles Anderson, club President, presented the prizes and thanked all participants, in particular Adrian Colborne and his Cowbridge School music department for all their help in staging this annual showcasing of musical talent.
