President Ian's Jottings

Well it has been a busy month. We returned to the Aqua and I do hope you are happy with the new seating arrangements, and that Grace/Greeters have taken note of my recent email for instructions.

It was a great pleasure to present the Community Award to Anna Eveleigh after she gave us an excellent presentation, with songs and actions. Great fun!! Anna has been running a group called Singing for the Brain which helps those who have difficulties with their memory. The group is now working under the Portland Community Action banner and she would be happy for anyone to join in. See details in the Free Portland News.

On 10th September I attended the Avalanche Church (St Andrew) to celebrate their annual Memorial Service, followed by a fabulous cream tea. This was very well attended and indeed appeared on that evening’s BBC Spotlight news.

Our keynote speaker during the month was Bill Reeves who is CEO of Portland Port. A really detailed presentation of the Port and its activities was given to a pleasing audience.

We had our Vire friends’ visit. Andrew and Mark did us proud by arranging a full programme for the weekend. A welcome reception at Mark and Ruth’s house, a visit to the underground stone mine, high tea at the Lobster Pot, visit to the Lighthouse, dinner at L&Os, and finally a farewell breakfast at Sarah and Brian’s. It was indeed a triumph and so good to see smiling and relaxed faces all round. Well done to everyone. Their President,

Jean-Francois, presented me with painting by their member, Claude Guillouet, which was especially painted To commemorate Vire’s visit to us.

Finally, it was my great privilege to award Lin and Ozzie of L&Os with an Honorary Membership. This was

presented after the Vire meal by way of a farmed certificate and one of our stone-mounted Rotary badges.

  President Ian.
