Rotary on the Rails.....
A trip out on the South Tynedale Light Railwaythumbnail view
On Sunday the 24th September members of our club were joined by friends & family and Ralph & Margaret Pickering from Silloth Rotary Club for a very enjoyable afternoon at South Tynedale Railway at Alston.
The weather was kind to us and our party of 21 were able to visit the signal box, the new Discovery museum & the Heritage workshops before embarking on our return steam train journey to Lintley Halt.
A carriage was reserved for our party and fun was had spotting various items along the route including deer and dragons! All ages enjoyed the trip including 3 year old Jessica who was travelling with her parents and grandparents David & Sheila Bulman.
The carriage had a verandah for those wishing to stand and enjoy the fresh air and smell the charcoal smoke as we travelled through the scenic valley.
Having successfully spotted all the items en route we were rewarded by a cup of tea/ coffee and a delicious homemade cream scone in the newly built cafe. The railway has had a major redevelopment in recent years with the welcome addition of a new platform, toilets, cafe and roof over the platforms.
The extension of the line to Slaggyford was not yet open........however this provides an excellent excuse to revisit when it does open next year!
