What a busy time I’ve had since my last article to Porthole!
Starting from 30 July, I attended the Rev Chris Briggs leaving do which consisted of a sumptuous afternoon tea. There were many speeches made from various people who Chris has been working with over his 20 years on the Island. An audience of approximately 200 attended to a sit down meal with puddings. I think Portland will miss him and his wife Nicola, I certainly will.
We have had two interesting and entertaining speakers. Rev James Menzies gave us an outstanding potted history of Northern England which was well received by the 25 folk who attended. Then there was Anna Eveleigh who talked about dementia and singing. Could have been a boring subject except that we were all treated to a bit of a sing along with actions. Great fun and a really sparkling speaker to boot.
We manned the barricades for the Southwell Summer Fare, many thanks for all those who volunteered. A good chance to meet and talk to people. The Friendship Cup was held at the Conservative Club and won by Paul Thomas and, would you credit it, Julia Lunn. Then there was Sarah’s Sea Themed do, what fun in her lovely garden.
Finally, I would like to encourage everyone to make a special effort to attend our Committee and Business Meetings, for it is here that the real work of Rotary happens. It is here that your suggestions and fund-raising efforts are planned for and where you can truly put your Service above Self.
