Amersham Martyrs Walk 2017

Wed, Aug 30th 2017 at 12:00 am - 12:00 am

A guided walk to Amersham Martyrs Memorial

Twenty of us braved the rain to walk to Amersham's Martyrs Memorial. The memorial is reached by walking along the footpath from St Mary's Church up the hill to Rectory Woods.

Our guides, who were dressed in period costumes, provided us with a fascinating insight into the town of Amersham and its inhabitants in the 15th Century.
The memorial was erected in 1931 to commemorate the Martyrs of Amersham who were burnt at the stake in 1521. Prior to the Reformation, lollards were condemned by the church for reading the bible in English.
After an interesting morning, the group concluded the day with a hearty lunch in The Kings Arms.
