On Thursday, 8th March 2018, members of the Rotary Club of South Queensferry heard a very interesting presentation from Gillian Smith and Pamela Mclauchlan from Queensferry Care in the Community on how the Rotary Club members can assist the QCCC.

QCCC was established in 1993 to provide day care services for the elderly in South Queensferry.  This was expanded in 2000 to cover Dalmeny, Kirkliston, Ratho Station, Ratho and Newbridge.  Volunteers provide community services (eg befriending), demand has however outgrown supply so there is a waiting list.  QCCC conducted a survey last year and as a result are looking at developing volunteering services in three areas – befriending, local transport and gardening. The survey also highlighted how much people value the service. Befriending is already established; new volunteers are given appropriate training and are PVG (Protection of Vulnerable Groups) checked before becoming befrienders.

Transport is not currently provided but is an area to be developed. This is needed for doctor and dentist appointments in the local area. Trips to the supermarket and some social visits will also be included. Again, training will be given and checks made, volunteers will receive expenses of 45p per mile.

Gardening is another area to be developed.  This would involve a couple of visits a year to tidy up gardens and would supplement the council grass cutting service.

Robbie Brechin introduced the speakers and Norman Watson gave the vote of thanks.
