Community Hub in St Andrews

Wed, Aug 16th 2017 at 12:50 pm - 2:00 pm

Club members please log in for more information.

This week’s speaker was a guest, Jillian Anderson, who explained that the focus of her talk would be on her current work in the local community and in particular on a future project that she and colleagues are hoping to establish in St Andrews. She is currently working for Express Group (Fife) Ltd. which was established in 1977 by social care professionals who realised that when patients were discharged from traditional mental hospitals there was a gap in service provision for them once they were back in the community. They were being rehoused within their local town but were then vulnerable to isolation. The women who started Express Group saw that what was needed was a safe place for people to meet, support each other, have a good meal and take part in positive activity.

There are now groups throughout Fife and Jill is the local coordinator for NE Fife, with four groups running lunch clubs in St Andrews and Cupar, a therapeutic gardening group in Kinburn Park and a Men’s Shed Group which meets at the Botanic Gardens.

Jill’s experience within St Andrews has led her to the conclusion that, although perhaps hidden, there are a large number of residents that are socially disadvantaged and isolated for reasons as diverse as age, disability, ill health, unemployment and family crisis. Taking account of all this, Jill’s vision is for a ‘Community Hub’ in St. Andrews which is essentially a multi-purpose community centre – a safe, dignified and welcoming place where people who need help and those who can provide help can meet - a place where the most vulnerable can be supported. Jill concluded by saying that the next step would be to consult with local people and a questionnaire is now being distributed to achieve this.

The vote of thanks was given by Douglas Jackson who commented on the extent to which the aims outlined by Jill coincided with those of Rotary and that there could well be scope for future collaboration.
