Topic:- North Coast 500

Rotary Club of Stirling  meeting of 3rd November 2017.

President Stewart Wilson started the meeting by reminding members of two upcoming events, the Bannockburn walk on 20th November, and the President's night on 23rd November.  Our successful candidate for next year's Euroscholar is Scott Hendry from Stirling High school, and we now have a date for the primary school quiz, 28/4/18.

Sports convener Colin Bayes announced another win in the Gavel taking us into the second round, but we were less successful at curling having again been beaten by Bridge of Allan.

Rotarian Derek Anderson's subject was a holiday covering part of the route of the North Coast 500. Created in 2014 by North Highland Initiative, a not for profit organisation established in 2005 by HRH Prince Charles, the North Coast 500 was designed to encourage and develop economic growth in the whole of the north highland region. Derek and his wife Fiona had explored part of the route 15 years ago, but using the information now available on the North Coast 500 web site, they planned to cover the whole route in two holidays. A range of possible itineraries is suggested with information on roads, where to stay, where to eat and the many things to see.  The official route is 515 miles starting and finishing at Inverness castle, but provides a basis for individual routes depending on personal interests and available time. Although many of the roads are narrow or single track the route has been very popular making booking ahead essential in the peak months. As Derek found, the scenery is unfailingly amazing making side trips essential. Wonderful cooked breakfasts were a feature of their holiday and, contrary to their plan it will take them more than one more holiday to cover the ground.
The vote of thanks was given by Sandy Farquharson.
