Topic Business Meeting

Stirling Rotary meeting Friday 22.9.17

President Stewart Wilson welcomed members to this Business Meeting, the term “business” meaning there was no speaker scheduled. Also present and warmly welcomed was Jorge Nuila, from Dunedin North Rotary Club, in Tampa, Florida. Jorge is involved in the production of coffee in Gauatemala, to which he travels often.

Perth Rotary Club are holding a black tie dinner on Saturday, November 4th., to celebrate the 100th. anniversary of their founding;  Stirling members are invited to attend.  The President is still working on organising a Thistle collection for Caribbean hurricane victims, but this is not yet finalised.  Other potential locations for a collection were also raised and considered.  The Christmas collection, however, is definitely arranged for December 23rd. in the Thistle.  Jane Wilson has organised a Scottish Night at the golf club towards the end of March 2018 and this is keenly anticipated. Sandy Leven informed members of efforts that were being made to populate waste land near the station with wild flowers.  It might be possible to involve schools in this also.  Derek Anderson reported that the club had applied to host the Primary School Quiz again and that our participation in Euroscola had already been agreed and organised.

The annual shoebox collection has been suspended this year, to give schools a break. During a visit last week by the District Governor, the importance of not hiding our light under a bushel was mentioned. In particular, the DG was concerned that Rotary’s huge contribution to the fight against polio sometimes received less publicity than that accorded to other major participants.  Whilst not disputing this, Crawford had researched and presented several examples of Rotary’s efforts in this field being recognised in the media at national and international level, which was good to hear.

Treasurer Edmond Mansion announced that the annual accounts had been prepared and submitted to the auditor, who had given initial, verbal approval.  The fully audited version of the accounts should be available shortly, for perusal by members.  Various conveners gave their reports, followed by an announcement from Robin Sutton of the name of the member who had won a bottle of Fellowship Malt.  This prize was awarded to the member who had submitted, via the club site, the most accurate answer to a competition involving spotting the number of appearances any given member made in photos Robin had displayed.  In this case, the lucky individual was Alan Rankin.

This week’s Speakers Host is Tommy Thomson, with Visitors Host Gordon Murphy. Anyone wishing to learn more about Stirling Rotary may care to visit the club’s website at www.stirling.rotary1010.org.
