Talk by Llyr Jones - founder of Cam yrth Gwm "Step by Step",

The remarkable catalogue of charitable challenges successfully accomplished in far-flung towns and villages in Africa by an irrepressible young Denbighsire farmer, provided a riveting evening for members at their meeting at Faenol Fawr. Guest speaker, multi-entrepreneurial former Brynhyfryd School, Ruthin pupil Llyr Jones, of Llanfairhangel MG near Cerrigydrudion, was introduced by past President Hari Hughes and after taking his audience on a power-presentation tour of his diversified farm, with its 1500 head of Welsh mountain sheep and acres of rapeseed producing sales of 6,000 bottles a month among numerous other enterprising mixed activities, he turned to some of his adventures in support of his chosen charity Cam Wrth Gum – ‘Step by Step.’ Crossing the bleak Sahara desert and negotiating an unmarked sandy section embedded with land mines, was just one of the hazards of a journey by van to help boost deprived communities by building them sheep sheds, a bore hole, and a wide range of wooden and metal structures during a two-week labour of love. The result of their efforts in Gambia and Kenya included providing clean water for 1400 local residents, 6 school buildings and ensuring safe clean food for over 1,000 children. President Rod Brocklehurst presented the speaker with a cheque towards his inspiring work for the benefit of others after past President John Hickerton had expressed the admiration of the audience for the astonishing achievements highlighted, often accomplished in the face of the most trying and demanding physical circumstances. It had been a truly fascinating and astonishing feat of graft and determination. Earlier Senior vice-president Keith Roberts reminded members to support the club’s own charitable Plant Fair taking place this Saturday (May 6) at Trefnant Village Hall from 10-30 to 1pm. On sale would be a wide range of plants and shrubs as well as light refreshments, while secretary Gordon Marshall confirmed that the club’s anniversary celebrations would be marked with a gathering at Faenol Fawr on Tuesday next May 9, at which numerous neighbouring clubs would also be represented.
