JAMFEST

Jamfest’ Helps to End Polio

A small team of pupils at Kirkcudbright Academy recently organised a ‘jamfest’ to help raise funds for the Rotary ‘End Polio Now’ campaign.

The ‘jamfest’ had 3 strands including a jam-making competition, a jam sale and a jam bake-off using the Purple4Polio jam donated by Wilkin & Sons Ltd and tea donated by TyPhoo.

The jam competition was a partnership event with over 30 entries from both the school community and Kirkcudbright Rotarians. The judging panel included: Head Judge, Penny Smith, from Kirkcudbright Academy along with Café Academy team members, Kali Cairnie, Katie Wright and Sam Middleton as well as Head Dinner Lady, Nicky Poland, Local Chef, Nick Morris and Rotarians, Paul Tebay and Andrew Orr.

The winning jams were as follows:

Under 18s:  1st prize: Levi Dickson, S2,  2nd Prize: Ross Clark, S3,  Best presentation: William Graham S1.

Over 18s:  1st prize: Sheila MacLaine, 2nd prize: Jackie Gault,  Best Presentation: Ruth McMorran

Marmalades: 1st prize: Dougie Ross, 2nd Prize: Melanie Coates,  Best Presentation: Molly Curtis.

Commenting on the entries, Nick Morris said that Levi Dickson’s chilli jam was of a particularly high standard and that he would like to invite Levi to show him how to make it and include it on his menu when he opens his Cookery School in Kirkcudbright.

Following the jam competition, pupils from the Café Academy Team made a variety of ‘jammy’ home bakes and set up a scone station for staff and Rotarians to sample some of the winning jams along with the Purple4 Polio jam. This was combined with a jam sale. The events raised over £200 for End Polio Now as well as giving pupils the opportunity to develop their organisational skills and further strengthen community partnership
