Born in County Durham, and raised in Norfolk, I graduated in Geology from Sheffield University. I enjoyed my time there so much I stayed for a further three years to gain a PhD in Materials. Moving south, I was a Lecturer in Geomaterials at Queen Mary, London University; at that time a haven for geologists whose interests had turned to the use of geological materials in the construction industry. My areas of research focussed on the durability of building stone, cement and concrete. Following a move to Kent, I joined my husband, Stephen, in his civil & structural engineering consultancy.
I have been involved in the City of London most of my adult life, having become a Liveryman of the Constructors’ Company in 1993, serving as the first lady Master in 2009/10. I am also a Court Assistant of the Masons’ Company, and the Tylers & Bricklayers, serve on Council of the City Livery Club, am a member of three Ward Clubs, and several pan-Livery organisations. I have been elected annually as one of the City’s four Ale Conners since 2007. Having well and truly caught the City of London “bug”, I was elected as Sheriff, serving during 2015/16. This was both an enormous privilege and the most tremendous fun.
Beyond the City, Stephen & I live on and manage our farm near Canterbury, and much enjoy travel and sailing. Recent sailing endeavours have included three years cruising in the Baltic, and two summers circumnavigating the British Isles & Ireland. Having headed south this year, a crossing of the Bay of Biscay beckons for 2018.
