Purple4Polio

Our polio planting scheme in 2017

The Rotary International Foundation (Rotary’s own Charity) has to raise £3 billion to eradicate Polio worldwide by 2018.
Polio is a very dangerous viral disease causing paralysis and death, usually in children under 5, and protection from Polio is simple using an oral vaccine.
In 1985 350,000 people were struck with polio and due to the Rotary Foundation Polio Eradication Programme (costing £6 billion), cases last year were only 223 worldwide!
Purple4Polio includes a crocus planting programme, as well as fund raising events, organised by the Rotary Clubs of Great Britain and Ireland to publicise the vaccination programme and 6 million crocus are to be planted
You are able to donate online at www.rotarygbi.org/polio-eradication and click on ‘use our online payment option’
Every pound you donate to this cause is increased to £3 by the bill and Belinda Gates Foundation who will add £2 to every £1 donated.
Vaccination against Polio is cheap at 40p per child and is given by drops into the mouth so is easy to administer. When the children are vaccinated, a finger is dipped in purple ink to identify them and that’s where the Purple4Polio idea came from.
Purple Crocus are being planted all over the country (6 million crocus), sponsored by local Rotary Clubs to highlight the fundraising for this worthy cause.
The Rotary Club of Furness is pleased to sponsor Dane Ghyll School joining the Purple4Polio Campaign with the planting at the School of Purple Crocus.
The Purple Crocus have now flowered and the school children are pictured with the colourful display of Purple Crocus with Furness Rotarians in attendance.
