B & F 7th. March 2017

Unanimous backing to extend the club’s long-standing links with Llandrillo College’s renowned catering department was given by members at a business and fellowship meeting at Faenol Fawr. Past President Geraint Griffith said initial arrangements for the annual award to be presented to the department’s outstanding student of the year from the Rhyl area, were fast approaching and sought the club’s approval to set the ball rolling once again. President Rod Brocklehurst said the award had been a regular feature over the years and it was clearly the wish of members that recognizing the excellence shown by a young local person should most certainly be continued. Meanwhile ties with neighbouring clubs were to be further strengthened with a return visit from the St Asaph club scheduled at Faenol Fawr for Tuesday March 28 as well as developing co-operative links with Denbigh, Llandudno and Prestatyn, including the revival of the popular inter-club bowls match at Bryn Newydd in the spring or summer. Earlier treasurer John Williams announced that the club had donated a sum of £500 to the Hope & Homes charity in support of needy children and in addition had shared in the £275 retrieved from the Wishing Well at the White Rose Centre during the past year. This sum had again been divided equally with Rhyl Inner Wheel and would also be used to support a worthy charitable cause. Vocational committee chairman Mike Howarth announced that a number of activities would make April and May busy months and he was also in the process of organizing another visit to the Bangor-on-Dee race meeting on Thursday June 8 to which wives, partners and friends would again be invited. Maintaining a close interest in the remarkable End Polio Now campaign, international committee chairman John Hickerton reported that the number of current cases of this killer disease had fallen to only 38 world wide. Even so, he cautioned that there was no room for complacency if the threat of a recurrence was to be averted and invited all members to make a £2 purchase of a jar of jam, donated freely to Rotary clubs by the generously supportive Tiptree Company. The object was to then fill the empty jar with small change with the entire proceeds going to help complete the incredible eradication of polio from the face of the earth.
