As has become almost a tradition at our District Conference, our club came away with a haul of awards with our club coming away this year with Best Newsletter, Best Service Photograph and Best Website. Clare Thomas was awarded with the Youth Service Award and there was a surprise for Darren who was awarded just one of the ten Rotary Regional Service Awards for a Polio Free World recognising personal service towards Rotary's goal of eradicating Polio. This was in recognition of the local variation images of the Rotary ThisClose to Ending Polio flyers as well as co-ordinating the planting of 20,000 crocus bulbs in Plymouth.
The confrence itself saw some fantastic speakers who really inspired those present.
Under the banner of "One World" we had sessions showcasing:
- International projects - and we even had a mention for our help in the past supporting a community library in Japan following the 2012 earthquake'
- Mental Health issues - where we were remined this is an issue on our doorstep and we must not hide away from it. As Rotarians, we can play a major role with this
- Adventure, Exploration and Leadership - showcasing some great examples including friend to the club Baz Gray;
- and the End Polio campaign - we are almost there but we must see the fight through to the end.
It was great to catch up with friends old and new from around the district and it really showed how we as Rotarians can make a difference to the world.
