This
morning at breakfast we had a very interesting talk from John Callaghan
about the Falklands Conflict and the role of HMS Glamorgan. John was a
Leading Marine Engineering Mechanic on board in April 1982 when the
ship was suddenly ordered to leave Gibraltar and head for the south
Atlantic. He described in particular the dramatic events which followed
the ship being struck by a land-based Exocet missile, being severely
damaged and in danger of capsizing. John fairly recently paid a return
visit to the Falklands, and found that he, like all the other sailors,
soldiers and airmen who were involved in the recapture of the Falklands,
was welcomed as a heroe. John now supports the Sea Scouts, holding the
rank of Chief Petty Officer.
