Joint Meeting with E Club - Helen Syme

.

The Club welcomed Helen Syme of the Rotary e-club of Southern Scotland, who explained to us that Rotary e-clubs are a lot like other Rotary clubs, in that they meet weekly, carry out service projects, support The Rotary Foundation, and socialize with each other.    The difference is that members join the meeting online, at a pre-arranged time that is convenient for them, each week.   The normal pattern is that one week is for business while the following week is for a speaker, or a discussion or for socialising.

There then followed a demonstration of a typical e-club evening, where, thanks to the good work carried out in advance by Andrew Clark, we could all see and talk to the other participants, on a large TV screen.

Helen went on to explain that members can be from anywhere in the world, and indeed, in addition to the eight “local” members, the membership of Helen's e-club now includes a number of international Rotarians, some of whom were “on-line” for this demonstration joint meeting.

E-club members can use webinars, videoconferencing, message boards, instant messaging, or tools like Skype and Google Hangout to communicate. For example, a club member might post content online for that week’s meeting, then other members join the discussion throughout the week.

Some e-club members also arrange to meet on occasions in person, at service projects, social activities or the RI Convention.  It was also pointed out that any Rotarian could make up a missed meeting by participating in an e-club online meeting.

The proceedings were concluded by an enthusiastic vote of thanks from Jim West for this very interesting joint meeting.
