Members were treated on Wednesday evening to an entertaining and informative talk by Graham Ewart of Kingsknowe Golf Club. Graham who can rightly be described as the “elder statesman” of Scottish golf modestly did not detail his many achievements and his lifelong service to Scottish golf. However our President Graham in his introduction gave us some detail – Graham played off a scratch handicap at age fourteen, played for Scotland at both boys and youth levels, and won numerous amateur competitions. He is an R & A Rules Referee, and is a past President both of the Lothians Golf Association and the Scottish Golf Union.
Graham outlined the history of Kingsknowe Golf Club, the clubhouse was built in 1908 at a cost of £3700 as a Gentlemens Club by a group of professional people from the city ( no golf course ). After six months they decided to add a golf course. The Clubhouse then would be in the country with no houses nearby. The members finally purchased the 100 acres of land forming the golf course in 1928. During the World War1 the Clubhouse was used as a Red Cross military hospital and in World War2 four holes of the course were ploughed up to increase food production.
The amusing differences between Scottish golf clubs which he visited as President of the Scottish Golf Union were highlighted, the examples were Loch Lomond with the accommodation and service of a five star hotel and Barra where the clubhouse housed two bikes, fees were placed in an honesty box and the greens were surrounded by chicken wire! Graeme used this contrast to illustrate the broad diversity of the appeal of golf across a wide social spectrum.
To those of us who play and are sometimes frustrated by the game of golf and those who don’t play Graeme showed us by example and by his humorous anecdotes that his lifelong contribution to golf has been a rewarding and fulfilling one and we were privileged to share his thoughts and reminiscences.
The club’s vote of thanks was proposed by John Sellars.
