Woodland Trust : talk by Jim Christie ( 14/3/17)
One of the biggest environmental problems facing the world is de-forestation and the U.K. is suffering more than most countries as it’s land mass only has a 12% tree coverage c.f. Europe which has on average 48%. Subsequently, the U.K. is the third largest net importer of timber in the world. Jim went on to explain how the Woodland Trust is taking a holistic approach to re-forestation using, in some cases, animals and birds to re-seed areas denuded of trees. In an expansive talk on the regeneration of Scottish forests, Jim proffered the idea that (quote ) “ every child should plant a tree before they leave school “ ( ….well that knocks ‘ Neighbours’ on the head ! ). Former Club President Chris Dowse is walking the entire 632 miles of the South West Coast Path from Minehead to Poole to raise funds for Prostate Cancer UK and Rotary Foundation's 'End Polio Now'. His trek will end on his 70th birthday.
