Young Musician of the Year Competition.

Sat, Apr 22nd 2017 at 12:00 am - 12:00 am

At Bishop's Stortford College

In April 2015, the Rotary Club of Bishop’s Stortford added a Young Musician competition to its existing youth events, very successfully.  On April 22nd 2017, the third competition will take place at Bishop’s Stortford College.

Last year over 80 entrants participated in three age groups, performing in strings, woodwind, brass, piano and vocal classes.  This year we hope to reach 100.  At the evening finalists’ concert, a winning instrumentalist and vocalist will be chosen by three adjudicators.  Both winners will be eligible to compete in the Rotary District 1240 Young Musician Final and, potentially, in the Regional and National Finals of Rotary in Britain and Ireland.  Our 2015 Young Musician, oboist Miles Bruce-Jones, was a National Finalist in Telford in spring 2016. This year’s instrumentalist in the District 1240 competition, on February 11th 2017 in Chelmsford Cathedral, will be talented cellist, Christopher Wilkin, a student at Bishop’s Stortford College.
But our competition is not just an opportunity for highly talented, exceptional young musicians to show what they can do and, hopefully, progress to the next stage.   For those younger and less experienced students who are starting their musical journey, the competition offers the experience of performing on a public stage, the opportunity to showcase their musical talent and to receive impartial feedback and assessment by experienced adjudicators –  all invaluable to their future musical life.

The competition is open to all amateur students, in full time education in or residing in postcodes CM21, CM22, CM23, CM24, up to and including the age of 18 on 22nd April 2017 (the date of the competition).

The Rotary Club of Bishop’s Stortford is grateful for sponsorship by County Councillors Colin Woodward and John Barfoot, from their Locality Budget Scheme, and by the De Rosa Music School.
