THE BULL

THE ROTARY CLUB OF HORNCHURCH AND UPMINSTER

Issue 1 December 2016

Message from our President

Dear Rotarians and Friends

What a Rotary life I had with 33 years as a member of a Rotary club. Am privileged to be associated with this international organisation which believes in Service above self and works for fellowship and world harmony and peace. We are the Biggest Non-Governmental and Non Political Organisation in the World. Mankind is our Business and that’s why we are involved in so many giant tasks like polio eradication from this earth and water aid programme for Africa, Jaipur Limb projects in India and so on. I am so proud to be the President of this club because I have dedicated and service minded Rotarians to help me and guide me, and I am grateful to them. We need to attract more members in our organisation so I want more members to be brought in. With this in mind I am looking forward for the success of our Satellite club which will be inaugurated in our evening meeting on 7th December 2016 at Mandarin Palace Restaurant in Hornchurch. Our charity collections are going well and the recent charity gala lunch in my house was a great success. With everybody’s help we collected £11,500  for 3 charities namely The Little Haven Hospice in Havering and Richard House in Beckton, and the Burma Medical mission Project by Havering Doctors and Pharmacists and Dentists. Let us not be complacent with our success but strive for more humanitarian work for a better world.

My Best Wishes to all

Yours in Rotary friendship

Dr Kochummen John

Congratulations President Kochummen John who received the regalia from Past President Geoff Furzland at the Handover Dinner held at the Upminster Golf Club June 2016

A message from you Senior Vice President

As your Senior Vice President I have enjoyed chairing the Club Service committee at my home and together with the Functions committee we have been busily engaged in organising the club events and social functions for the coming year.

A Note from your Editor.

We're back with just a little load of old Bull in this edition. Will there be more? This remains to be seen and could be a topic for discussion at a fellowship meeting early in the New Year. Had we continued with the old Bull it would have been a Bumper edition because we have done so much over the past year. We now have the annual fete to go with, the Hornchurch Town Show, the Sponsored Walk, the visit to Heidelberg with our wonderful German friends, the Quiz, the 2 Jazz nights, the Tea at the Queens for our elderly residents, the boules competition, indoor bowls, the school shoe box scheme, Father Christmas visiting Dycorts School, our Christmas collections ............ (Sorry if I have missed anything out). Then of course we had the two major events, the landmark 70th. Charter lunch and the fabulous President's Project. Despite our initial concerns during the planning stage we somehow managed to pull the event off and made an amazing £11,500!Rotary is not just about raising money though we should be having fun as well and I believe we have done this. Having to move to a new venue was no fun in the early days but we have settled down now to a mostly settled routine .We are still ironing out a few little problems but that's life. There have been a number of issues which have taxed us such as the falling membership due ,sadly to the passing of dear friends and the problems and illhealth of some our most loyal members which has restricted their attendance. Dear friends such as Ray, Sylvia, Dennis, Lew, Bob, Dick and Ron. Operations sickness and accidents have all played a part in affecting attendance. If I have failed to mention by name anyone who has been affected, please accept my sincere apologies now. In mentioning Ron it reminds me of how worried we were about replacing him as Speaker secretary. Then Colin G'day Davies stepped up to the plate and Boy Oh Boy (as he would say) is he doing a good job! Well done to all our members and 'Friends' for all that you do to make our club successful. As they say 'Every little Helps. You may not be able to do as much as you used to or would like to do but your contribution is still valued. I send greetings to all our potential new Rotarians who are starting the Satellite Club and I wish you great success and happiness as you begin your journey.

A Christmas Poem sent in from Colin

December 2016
There is a list of folks we know,  all written in a book,
And every year at Christmas time, we go and take a look,
And that is when we realize, these names are a part,
Not in the book they’re written in, but of our very heart.

For each name stands for someone, who has touched our life some time,
And in that meeting they’ve become, The “Rhythm of the Rhyme”,
We really feel we are a part, of each remembered name,
And our lives are so much better than they were before you came.

For once that you’ve known someone, the years cannot erase,
The memory of a pleasant word or a friendly face,
So never think our Christmas cards are just a mere routine,
Of names upon a list forgotten in between,
For when we send a Christmas card that is addressed to you
It is because you’re on that list of friends both old and new.

And whether we have known you for many years or few,
In some way you have had a part, in sharing things we do,
So every year when Christmas comes, we just realize anew,
The nicest gift that God can give, is knowing folks like you.

I would like to finish by saying this edition is only a very limited snapshot of what we have and are doing. Please have a look at our Web site because it is so up to date and it also  tells what is going to happen in the days and weeks ahead. Another great job that CGD is doing. (Come on-Work it out) Collecting in Rainham. Brrrrr.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

GEORGE

By the time you read this some of these functions have will have already taken place and I am pleased to say that with everybody's support they have been very successful.

The Club Christmas Lunch (party) 18th December at the Masonic Hall in Deyncourt Gardens was well attended and a great success. Thanks to the hard work of Gerrie Furzland and Gill Hare the raffle made £400.

5th February 2017 Sunday Lunch at Kanchans 12.30 in Gants Hill. £25 per person.

The price will include soft drinks and there will also be a pay bar.

Again as we would like to make this an exciting event please bring along as many family members and friends as possible.  Remember that as well as having a good time any profit that we make will be donated to Rotary's End Polio Now fund. Your support will be much appreciated.

Liaquat
