Neville's Cross Battlers

Thu, Jan 19th 2017 at 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm

Surprises awaited us - at least for those members who had not read this page before the meeting.

Nothing to do with the Battle of Neville's Cross - see below for an explanation from the Battlers' Facebook page.

We are four friends training for our attempt to swim the English Channel (Dover to Cap Gris Nez) in August 2016. We are also fundraising to improve the sports facilities at the primary school that our children attend. Like our page to keep up to date with our training and fundraising. Neville's Cross Primary School is in Durham and near the site of the Battle of Neville's Cross which took place in 1346.

And they did it! The four friends - Jenny Search, Michael Sykes, Libby Unsworth and Jacki Patrickson - did it in 13 hours 41 minutes, swimming in relays. Well done!

They gave us an excellent joint presentation, describing how they came together in their fundraising efforts and how the children at the school has devised their “logo” (above). Explaining how they went about training, they surprised us when they said that this included swimming at night, off the coast at Blyth.

The image below shows the sort of sea conditions they faced, surrounded by constant shipping in one of the busiest seways in the world.

And this image demonstrates the value of their night-time training during the final leg of the swim.

We all wished them well in their continuing fundraising efforts.
