Club Meeting "” Graham Smith

Tue, Jan 24th 2017 at 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Graham Smith spoke about architect James Smith and Overtoun House, Dumbarton, and Alastair Wilson proposed the vote of thanks.

President Bill Jones welcomed 13 other members.

Graham Smith spoke about architect James Smith, who designed the mansion Invergare at Rhu, lived there for three years, and was the father of Madeleine Smith who was accused of poisoning her lover — but the case was not proven.

Smith, whose best known design was the McLellan Galleries in Glasgow, also designed Overtoun House at Milton, Dumbarton. It was the home of John White, later Baron Overtoun, but was donated by his son to the people of Dumbarton in 1938. In wartime it was a convalescent hospital for war wounded, but from 1947-70 it was a maternity hospital.

In 1975 it was the home of the Government-backed Quality of Life Experiment, and then various religious groups occupied it. Still owned by West Dunbartonshire Council, it is currently a Women's Refuge, but part of it is open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays from 10am-4pm. The catering is good, and there are several splendid walks.

Alastair Wilson proposed the vote of thanks, and the weekly raffle for a whisky miniature was won by the organiser, Derek Hall.
