Barrow Rotary Club members decided to get involved in the Books2Africa project which sees unwanted books sent out to Africa to be given to youngsters to help with their reading.

The Rotarians turned to the pupils of South Walney Infant and Nursery School and Rotarians Mike Dilks and Graham Parker gave a presentation to the children.

“We explained how many schools in Africa have very few books. Some none at all,” said Graham. “So we asked the children if they had any books they had read and were unlikely to want to read again. The response was instant - and huge.”

Rotary has funded the transportation and now 18 boxes of books, plus some educational posters with lesson plans, have been shipped to Africa.

Before the books left Barrow some of the Walney school’s school councillors attached sticky labels to the boxes telling of the destination and where the books had come from.

The Rotary Club of Barrow-in-Furness thanks all the children of the school for their efforts which will be a great help to youngsters in Africa.
