Last week a deputation from Hawick Rotary
Club went to Langholm Rotary Club for the traditional first-foot visit and a
pleasant evening was had by all.
This week the Club held their first
meeting at their new venue of the Mansfield House Hotel. Three visitors
from Selkirk Rotary Club were the visitors, Past President Jim McPherson, Paul
Thomlinson and Vice President Ferdous Ahmed and also attending was Rory
Bannerman, guest of his father Sandy. Rory informed members of two events
planned for later this year. A fund-raising event will be held on 24th
March for well-known "flapper" trainer Tyrone Williams who has been suffering
from some health problems and in August a whole weekend of music will be held at
various venues in Hawick in a live festival involving local talent backed up by
The String Band.
The speaker Jim McPherson gave an
illustrated and interesting talk on the 30th anniversary of The Vine Trust and
his involvement in a visit to Tanzania, East Africa with a group of Scottish
youngsters who helped to build a house for a family. He also explained the
aims and projects of the Trust in their work in Africa and Amazonia and how it
benefitted not only the natives but the volunteers taking part. An
interesting talk evoked many questions after which Past President Tommy Mulvee
gave the club's vote of thanks.
The next fundraising event in the Rotary
calendar is the ever-popular quiz night for local charities on Friday, 17th
February at 7 p.m. in the Catholic Hall for teams of 4 at £12 with nibbles and a
bar provided and details can be obtained from any Rotarian or Kerr Scott at
375015.
