North Wales Cancer Appeal

Talk by Debbie Goodband

With five children a day diagnosed with cancer and every other adult born before 1960 predicted to be affected, the need to support our own North Wales Cancer Treatment Centre was greater than ever, members were told at their open meeting at Faenol Fawr. Introduced by President Rod Brocklehurst, guest speaker Debbie Goodband, volunteer secretary of the revitalized Ron & Margaret Smith Appeal now incorporated into the North Wales Cancer Appeal, said the wonderful care and treatment being provided to patients young and old at the Cancer Centre at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd was greatly to be admired. But with public funds alone unable to provide the vital and costly equipment needed, the role of the Appeal was never more essential. Although the work was being sustained by thousands of volunteers giving of their time and energies to ensure their aspirational objectives were achieved, still more helpers would be greatly welcomed. Having already raised over £3m since its launch in 1991, the Charity has helped fund a brand new Linas radiotherapy machine which became operational last month with donations worth £950,000, topped up with £60,000 raised so far this year alone. “We are working extremely hard to widen the profile of our Appeal to the public at large and intend to maintain our role as a valuable conduit and to monitor investments to see that resources are not squandered,” she added. Thanks to the speaker were warmly expressed by past President Hari Hughes who commended the Appeal committee and their industrious team on their magnificent efforts to maintain the widely recognized reputation of the wonderful YGC Cancer Centre. “It must be most rewarding to know that what you do really does make a difference.” he added. A donation of £100 was presented on behalf of the club by President Rod after secretary Gordon Marshall had earlier announced that former holders Rhyl had been drawn at home to Llandudno in the second round of the Rotary District Quiz, on Tuesday January 10. Meanwhile, the next meeting will be the annual Christmas Dinner at Faenol Fawr on Tuesday December 13.
