When I started this months diary I thought what can I write about? But it soon became clear…
* On the 2nd of October we hosted the Community Tea between us, Bridport and Casterbridge, and everyone enjoyed it. Thanks go to all who assisted on that day and to Sheila who organised the event.
* The final total for the concert on 23/9/16 at Weymouth Pavilion with the Pasadena Roof Orchestra was £1009, raised for Rotary Charities. This was a popular evening. Portland Rotary club are very grateful to the Pasadena Roof Orchestra with band leader Duncan Galloway for supporting this fund raising concert. Special thanks to Weymouth Pavilion, especially marketing manager Chris Cole for his help, and to those who donated raffle prizes. (from Peter and Rosemary)
* Mark and his group have set off to Nepal, to continue his assessment of the water projects. and look forward to his talk on their return
Rachel has again been busy, organising the table top sale for October, and raised approx £170.00 for the beneficiary group., the Portland Carers Support Group.
* Jane presented a cheque for £100, donated for our help at the Southwell Fayre.
* News reached us of the disaster in Haiti and beyond -
Haitians, Battered by Hurricane, Huddle in Caves:
‘This Is the Only Shelter We Have’
“It is our house that God created when we most needed it,” said one of the hundreds of villagers who fled into caves as Hurricane Matthew destroyed their homes. New York Times, By AZAM AHMED, OCT. 17, 2016
Rotary wished to help, and it was proposed that our club send a total of £500.00, to help purchase survival boxes, and that it should include the money raised at my handover.
* Remembrance day is Sunday 13th Nov and following discussion £100.00 will be donated to purchase two wreaths, one to go to the British legion the extra one for the American Memorial. We have been asked to assist to help with traffic road closure at the grove and Heights, so need volunteers please.
* The youth committee are going into discussion with Casterbridge with regard to Breakthrough, so please read Diana Apps’ excellent article on page 1 and 2 of October's Porthole Magazine.
* Our Xmas meal has been booked Ian dealing with numbers and tickets.
Well that’s it for now, I’ve come to accept there’s no such thing as a quiet month ….
