An event for dogs and their owners at Dunwood Park in Shaw.

Crompton and Royton Rotary Club needed a new challenge, so this year they decided to run a Dog Show.

After looking around for a suitable venue they settled on the recently restored Dunwood Park in Shaw, since during their search they had noticed that dozens of dog owners walked their dogs in the park most days.

After discussions with Oldham Council, Shaw and Crompton Parish Council, Friends of Dunwood Park and Guide Dogs they decided to go ahead with their plans for a Dog Walkers Parade. Nearly 200 owners entered their dogs into four categories, Cutest Puppy, Prettiest Bitch, most Handsome Dog and the most popular class, Dog or Bitch with the Waggiest Tail. The judges had a difficult job deciding the winners in each class.

At one stage over 500 people were there cheering on their favourites and congratulating the winners. Chief Organiser Derek Cottrell commented, “it has been a pleasure to run this event and we are looking forward to being here again next year. Occasionally during the planning stage we wondered if we were barking up the wrong tree but all went well on the day”.
