Fast attack and bombers - Submarine Life in the Fast and Slow Lane

On Tuesday of last week the Club was privileged to hear some astounding highlights from a submariner's career. Brian Mathers, ex operations officer in our submarine fleet, held us spellbound with his exploits, related with humour and modesty, conveying his experiences in the Service from extreme danger to lighthearted relief. No one could fail to be impressed by the bravery, dedication and commitment from those who are prepared to patrol beneath the waves on our behalf for up to four months at a time with no contact from home, to preserve the safety of the world.

Brian had started as a mechanic in the family transport and export business, then became an electrician, and a part time DJ, before joining the Royal Navy and rising to become operations officer on one of our foremost submarines, serving all over the world, including the Falklands and first Iraq wars. It would be difficult to find a more enthusiastic ambassador for the Submarine Service.
On retiral from the Navy, Brian continues to use his technology expertise helping small businesses analyse and develop their websites in conjunction with Google. He and his wife live in Glenrothes.
