Rotary Club of Leven – Tuesday 6th December

The club welcomed Kirsty Michie and Connor Methven, both Sea Cadets to regale the members about their week at RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards).  This leadership development focuses on young people aged from 16 to 18 years. RYLA takes place at the Abernethy Trust residential camp at Nethybridge, nr. Aviemore and lasts seven days and participants take partin a programme of physical and intellectual activities, which will develop skills in:

·        Leadership fundamentals and ethics

·        Communication skills

·        Problem solving and conflict management

·        Community and global citizenship

On these foundations are built self-confidence and self-esteem which are vital aspects of responsible and global citizenship.

Both Kirsty and Connor admitted that, even on boarding the bus for the trip North, being nervous about meeting so many people they did not know and taking on challenges that they had not experienced before. However, both agreed that, as the week went on, their confidence grew as they gelled with their team- and room-mates and they developed as individuals, building on their strengths and improving areas where they felt less confident.   They have also made life-long friendships with young people from North and East Scotland.

Through Rotary we offer young people the chance to develop personal skills and a better awareness of the problems that face the world today. It is an opportunity to meet, work and have a great time with like-minded people, guided and supported by Rotarians.
