Our recent speaker Ewan Redpath from Madras was the Rotary Club of St Andrews chosen candidate to join a group of 26 Scottish students to visit the European Parliament in Strasbourg earlier this year. A school prizewinner for both French and Politics he has in addition studied Swedish and Mandarin. As someone who narrowly missed a seat in the Scottish Youth Parliament he was an obvious choice for the Euroscola project. Some 500 delegates attended from all over Europe with all conversations conducted in either French or English. The students took part in various projects including street surveys questioning the townspeople in French. Ewan spent a day in the Parliament and had the opportunity to be the group spokesperson in the debating chamber which he described as very large and somewhat daunting. His experience enabled Ewan to use his language skills in a meaningful and realistic context while meeting young people from all over Europe with diverse opinions. It helped both him and others to develop a cultural awareness together with an understanding and appreciation for cooperation across borders. James Murray gave the vote of thanks describing Ewan as an outstanding representative who had provided a mature insightful and thoughtful talk.
