The Rotary Club of St Andrews held its Burns Lunch at the Scores Hotel on Wednesday 25 January which was enjoyed greatly by over 50 members and guests. President John Ardley invited Ian Johnston, a Past President of the St Andrews Burns Club, to organise and conduct proceedings. Dennis Hopper piped in the haggis which was duly addressed and carved with a ceremonial sword, to the amusement of the assembled company, by Bill Whyte.
Jimmy Spankie proposed the Immortal Memory. This took the form of a question and answer session involving the audience and testing their knowledge of the life and times of the Bard. Ann Baird sang 3 songs by Robert Burns with accompaniment from Bela Simandi and then Ian Johnston shared some thoughts on the St Andrews Burns Club. The first meeting of this club was held in the Royal Hotel, St Andrews, on 25 January 1869, the 110 Anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns. In his short life of 37 years he wrote an amazing quantity of verse and song and on this day, the 258 anniversary of his birth, we are adding our modest contribution to the many celebrations being held worldwide.
This most enjoyable lunch concluded with some more Burns’ songs by Ann and Bela with community singing and ending with Auld Lang Syne.
