Helping Young People

Promoting the development of young people in our community

The Wirksworth Rotary Club has built up close relationships with the local schools over a number of years and we are very proud to be involved where we can to help in the development of young people of Wirksworth and the surrounding area.

Here are some examples of what we do:

Distribute Dictionaries

Each September we distribute and present illustrated dictionaries to the Year 6 children in the primary schools of Wirksworth and neighbouring villages. We know from the feedback we get from the teachers and children that these dictionaries are very well received.

Help With Reading

A group of club members commit their time to listen to children reading in the Reception and Year 1 classes in both of the Wirksworth Infant Schools.

Assist With Careers Advice

We also try to use the vocational skills and experience we have within our members to help young people in areas such as job applications, CV writing and interview skills. As part of this we have a programme in place to help the Year 10 students at the Anthony Gell School produce their CVs.

Rotary Youth Competitions

With the help and support of the staff at the Anthony Gell School in Wirksworth we facilitate and judge the following Rotary Youth Competitions:

  • Young Chef Award - always a very popular competition to judge with the standard of food preparation very high, the club has had a successful tradition of entering contestants in the Rotary District Young Chef annual competition.

  • Young Musician Award - each year we present this award which supports and rewards not only musical ability and talent, but also persistence and commitment.

  • Young Speaker Award - the club has a long tradition of making this award at both senior (aged 16+) and junior (aged 11-16) year groups in the school.

  • Young Maker and Young ICT Designer Awards - introduced by the club for the first time in 2017, we plan to continue to offer these awards to entrants in the 16+ age group. In 2018 the judging has been extended to include professionals from the local community with appropriate knowledge and experience.
