Lunchtime Meeting

Wed, Mar 15th 2017 at 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Among other things, Bob explained the timeline over many decades.

Our speaker, Bob Clarke.

A Marvellous Contraption

In an unusual illustrated presentation which he entitled "A Marvellous Contraption", Bob Clarke an engineer, historian and archaeologist talked to the Club at its lunchtime meeting on the 15th March about Boscombe Down and a Second World War machine devised there to aid safety of air crew.

The session introduced research into a little known but important aspect of aircrew safety with a high velocity wind machine which delivered draughts in excess of 200 miles per hour enabling crew to be blown clear in the event of damage to aircraft by enemy strike.

The contraption is still in-situ at Boscombe Down but there are plans to either scrap it or preferably relocate this unique piece of War history to a Museum.

Bob has offered his services to talk to the Club again on our choice from a variety subjects on which he has expertise.
