New President Rod's First B & F Meeting

Fresh moves to explore the prospect of establishing a satellite club centred on Ysbyty Glan Clwyd are to be pursued by the Rotary Club of Rhyl, the oldest in North Wales. Presiding at the first members’ meeting since his recent installation as the club’s 91st President, Rod Brocklehurst told a business and fellowship gathering at Faenol Fawr that with falling membership levels still a key challenge, there were strong grounds for re-visiting the chances presented at the expansive district hospital. “District 1180 has been actively sponsoring satellite clubs in several locations over the past few years with a good deal of success and there is every justification in our club seeing what might be possible at YGC,” he added. “We will be making purposeful moves in this direction in the coming months and will keep members informed of developments in what we hope could become a really valuable first in our area.” Meanwhile, Rhyl will be lending full support for neighbouring St Asaph club’s popular annual Country Fair on Sunday August 21 by taking a stall and providing a variety of attractions as part of their strong and varied programme of fund-raising events in aid of worthy causes. President Rod confirmed that his nominated charity during his year in office would be in support of Hope and Homes for Children and he was confident that a speaker from this chosen charity would visit the club to illustrate the invaluable work in which they were engaged. Past President Alan Mival reported that the Rhyl Music Club’s young persons’ concert, sponsored by Rhyl Rotary, had been a most worthwhile and successful event for which the Music Club had expressed their deep appreciation. Senior vice-president Keith Roberts said he was in the process of finalising dates for charitable collections by members at the Morrisons and Asda super stores, while Youth Service chairman Gareth Davies said the schools writing competition sponsored by the club and culminating in an award presentation at Ysgol Llewelyn had been extremely well received. He was confident of its being broadened out to involve more schools and become an annual feature. Vocational chairman Mike Howarth announced an attractive sequence of trips and social events coming on stream while Community Service chairman Hari Hughes said he had received numerous letters of thanks following the recent Senior Citizens mystery coach trip and tea. The President said it was important that Rotary membership was a vehicle for fun and enjoyment alongside its serious commitment to Rotary International’s world-wide motto of “Rotary Serving Humanity.”
