Rotary club of Stirling meeting of 19th May 2017.
President Alan Rankin reminded members that our next meeting on Thursday 25th May will be the club assembly, 6.30 for 7pm, at which ADG Alistair Spowage will be present.
Our only visitor was our speaker Jane Cameron, Art Curator at the University of Stirling. The bulk of the art collection is housed in the Pathfoot building, A listed, and now 50 years old. When the university was built 1% of the cost was allocated to buying art works, allowing the first principal Tom Cottrell to acquire a significant collection, later enhanced by a gift of 14 paintings by JD Ferguson, given by the artist's family, including a very handsome portrait of Tom Cottrell by the artist. Jane continues the tradition embraced by Tom Cottrell of seeing the art as part of everyday experience within the Pathfoot building, it's 21 courtyards, and throughout the spectacular landscape of the campus. Jane's programme also reaches out to the community, working with Cornton Vale, the Smith Museum, art colleges, and Forth Valley college, amongst others, and houses exhibits from the community, at present photography by James Hogg. The campus is also part of the artistic environment and currently a garden of time is planned, an area where the public can remember their loved ones. It was clear that under Jane Cameron, art at Stirling university is very much alive, continuing to develop into new areas. the vote of thanks was given by Elspeth King.
Our next Friday meeting at the Golden Lion will be on 9th June, Speaker's host Ian Milton.
There will be no meeting on Friday 26th May or 2nd June.
