As many of you will know Gail could not make her previous appointment to talk about her trip - engrossed in studying for her exams. These have now passed and she will be coming along this evening to give her report.

Gail Allan of Stewarton Academy was our Euroscola representative at the European Parliament in Strasbourg in February this year and many will have read about or seen videos documenting the group's experiences there on our Facebook and Twitter pages. Tonight we get to hear first-hand the real story of the trip when we welcome Gail to our meeting.

Over 540 high-school students and their teachers coming from 21 different EU countries converged to the seat of the European Parliament in Strasbourg on 17 February, to debate and submit proposals on various EU topics, such as renewable energy, migration or integration, security and human rights, or the future of Europe.

They had the opportunity to meet the German MEP Evelyne Gebhardt and ask her some questions. Those ranged from EU support to Greece, to the Brexit and rising populism in Europe, through to abstention in EU elections.

Ms. Gebhardt emphasized the importance for the EU to explain the benefits it brings to citizens and to clarify its vision. "Do we want a Europe of values or of internal market? Social justice or entrepreneurship? Peace or militarization?" she asked.

In the afternoon, students gathered in six different working groups, before submitting their proposals to the "plenary". On youth employment, for instance, they proposed awareness-raising campaigns at EU level on career opportunities in promising sectors, such as sustainable development and ICTs.
