Andy Dick - The Lost Village of Benquat

Thu, May 4th 2017 at 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Rotarian responsible for speaker - Willie Stewart

The village of Benwhat was built by the Dalmellington Iron Company in the 1850s to house workers at the nearby coal mines which supplied the ironworks at Waterside with coal.

The war memorial commemorates the men from Benwhat Village who were killed in the First World War. The monument was built in the 1920s.

Benwhat village was cleared of population in the 1950s and the houses demolished and the families were re-housed in new schemes at Bellsbank and Dalmellington. Only the war memorial remains at the site.
