Gail Elder - Literacy in Primary Schools

Gail Elder speaking about Literacy in Primary Schools and her work in Onthank Primary.

Rotarian responsible for Speaker - Margaret Clark

Gail Elder

As members will be aware Margaret Clark spoke to us recently about getting involved in a project at Onthank Primary. She has invited Gail Elder along to tell us more and help us understand the background. Gail has provided a brief biography in her own words. (Your editor couldn't possibly comment on the lycra!)

"My name is Gail Elder.

"I have been a teacher at Onthank Primary School in Kilmarnock since 2001.  I moved from the smallest school in East Ayrshire, Littlemill in Rankinston, to the biggest school! I have taught all stages of the primary school, spending longest with Primary 6. I recently had a year’s secondment to develop literacy resources and provide staff development in literacy across East Ayrshire. I currently have responsibility for Literacy and Learning Support in Onthank- a role which is proving to be the most challenging one I have had.

"I graduated in 1985 from Aberdeen University with a Bachelor of Education degree and started my teaching career in a four teacher school which was the heart of a farming community north of Aberdeen. I worked there for 6 years before taking a career break to have my family – two sons. During this ‘break’ my husband’s job moved to Glasgow so we all headed south to the Irvine Valley. I love this area and my favourite thing, apart from reading, is to go cycling – something my husband and I do most weekends and when on holiday in France (but absolutely no Lycra is involved!)."
